Great LatheThis lathe is awesome for turning pens. Anything larger like a ten inch bowl begins to be too much. The belt begins to slip. I have gotten a lot of good use out of it though and I have more than my money back on it.

Miss leadingThe specs. on this lathe shows a variable speed to be 500 to 4000 RPM,s. This is not true unless you do a belt change, then use the variable speed. With the belt on high speed the slow speed on mine is about 1300 rpm. If I apply any liquid finishing products ath this rpm, it slings the liquid all over. If this unit went down to the 500 rpm's with the speed controller and not with a belt change there would be no problems. The low 500 rpm's lets me do a much better fininshing and control of the appliaction. I find the belt change to be a ROYAL PAIN and when the money is there I'll buy a different machine. The light is a floppy deal and it seems to move during turning. I often have to re-adjust it. Further more I called the tech people and the person I spoke with could only repeat what was in the specs. and had he no indepth knowledge of the basics. He didn't know the difference between AC & DC electric motors. They had no technical information which I needed to modify the speed controler to bring it down to the 500 RPM range. I was told that the MFGR would not supply them with a schematic of the controler. I have dealt with Penn State for quite some time and this is the first item that I have grown to dislike. If I can figure out the speed controller, maybe things might be different. I do pen turning and the machine has all the basics to do the turning but not the finishing. Richard

Nice LatheHad this lathe a little over a year now and have used it extensively. I've had a few problems with it but overall I'm happy with it's performance. After about two months of use the threads that secure the locking bolt for the tailstock spindle stripped out. It looked like just a poor quality job of tapping the threads. I called PSI and they replaced the entire tailstock in about a week no questions asked. Love the variable speed. Good lathe for the money.

SatisfiedOverall I'm pretty satisfied. For the price I think I got more than I expected. Just a few misses: it's louder than I expected, the manual is very basic, and the indexing lock (bolt) keeps vibrating to where it begins to engage (I fixed that with a washer). The hits are: I set it up and started turning within 30 minutes and the head and tail stock were dead-on aligned.

First Lathe (for an Accountant)After plenty of research and then waiting for it to come in I am extremely satisfied. Read the instructions and was using it in 1/2 hour. Well constructed, easy to use, glad I spent the extra $ and got the variable speed. I have had for over a month and consider it one of my top 3 best investments. The others are my wife and the dog. (Not necessarily in that order.)

Turncrafter Commander 10Somewhat disappointed with the light. The light arm is to limber to stay put. So far no other problems.
