well designed, well made
Review by David J. on 15 Sep 2024 review stating well designed, well made
This brass hammer kit is precision made with a good smooth finish, and good fit for the 3" x 1/2" steel threaded rod. This makes the hammer really strong, especially important at the handle-head junction. An easy turning project. Personally I would not use epoxy to attach the handle, as then you could never take it apart if it were damaged. I just drilled a slight ly smaller hole in the handle blank, threaded it with a 1/2" tap, then used a 1/2" bolt in my 4 jaw chuck as a mandrel to hold the blnak for turning. I found I could not even buy a brass rod to turn, drill, and tap for a homemade hammer head, for the price of this kit.

A bit heavy, but a beautiful result.
Review by Evan B. on 19 Nov 2023 review stating A bit heavy, but a beautiful result.
At 22 oz, this is heavier than I expected, but the hammer is everything a hammer should be and once the epoxy cured it was ready to go.

I've been wanting one of these hammers for a while. I finally order one and am very pleased with it. I took a hammer handle and shaped it to the desired shape. Easy to make and very solid. Nice addition to my addition to my hammer collection.

Easy and Nice Kit

Overall a nice kit. I chose to make a more traditional handle out of Rosewood with Tru-Oil finish. Been used for pen disassembly and making adjustments on hand planes.

Nice Gift.
Review by Thomas S. on 28 Dec 2021 review stating Nice Gift.
I purchased 2 Brass hammers kits, one for me and one for my brother. I enjoyed turning the handles on my lathe. I followed the instructions however decided to make the handles 8 1/2 inches. The instruction and diagram is a bit misleading showing the hole almost the full length, plus the threaded connecting shank of 1/2 inch thus a hole on 7/16 might allow it to tread in. The epoxy worked ok but you will never get the shank out is a new handle is needed. I recommend looking at the reviews before starting the kit.

Fun, easy, and useful.
Review by Gregory M. on 17 Oct 2021 review stating Fun, easy, and useful.
An easy and really nice looking project. I made it a bit longer than the instructions suggested, 10.5" long from top of brass to bottom of handle, which I thin gives it a bit more versatility. I used a piece of curly (I don't know if you can see it from the photo) hickory from a friend who had a tree come down, and tapped it with a 1/2" tap, set in epoxy.
You only have to be careful about a few things. As others have pointed out, there's a bit of a burr on the drilled hole in the head, but that can easily be taken care of with a diamond or fine file or even sandpaper. You want to make sure that the fit into the drilled hole is a very close fit, and I dismounted the handle from the lathe a number of times to make sure. And make sure that the amount of threaded rod sticking out of the handle doesn't bottom out in the brass head. Best thing to do is to have a short enough piece sticking out that the brass head seats securely on the shoulder (end) of the handle.
I wanted to try making an oval handle using offcenter turning, but I couldn't figure out how to thread the rod in and make sure that the long axis of the oval is in line with the brass head. I may try NOT threading the hole and just epoxying it in.
I posted a photo on my FB page and ALL my friends liked it.

My first try at one of your "kits". Worked out OK, but would have been nice to not need epoxy to attach the handle.

Great Gift, Straightforward Build
Review by Steve on 1 Aug 2019 review stating Great Gift, Straightforward Build
The high-quality brass head is no-nonsense and gives this tool a feeling of seasoned authority. It attaches via a threaded bolt and epoxy. I wrapped the threads with a dozen wraps of teflon tape before twisting the head on to prevent any unscrewing. The handle is walnut with indexed maple plugs. Only 4 stars because the head scrapes off the handle's finish when you twist it home.
