Here's a Survival Tool that may be a lifesaver for any hunter, camper or fisherman. The Survival Fire Starter works better than matches and lighters and will function reliably in wet, windy or cold conditions. The system includes a flint rod, a steel striker, a magnesium bar, a leather strap and a compass. To make a fire, use the striker to scrape flakes from the magnesium bar, then quickly scrape the striker against the flint. Hot sparks will fly off the flint that ignite the magnesium. Magnesium is suited to ignite in a wet environment and creates a white-hot starter fire of about 5400 degrees. This project is easy to make (turn a handle between centers). Insert the compass at the end of the handle for a finishing touch Includes a 5/8 dia x 2-5/8 magnesium bar with a .15 dia flint and 15mm dia compass.

Good quality project that was easy to turn and finish. Makes a unique gift for Boy Scouts/Girl Scouts, campers or anyone with an outdoor fireplace or firepit.

This is a great project if you or your son are in the Boy Scouts. If you or someone in your pack or troup has a lathe have a turning day. Help your guys earn a badge, not to mention they will have a great tool for their campouts and hikes.

If you like camping or outdoor activities this is an extremely nice project to make. The compass on the backside is extremely handy. I drilled the hole extra deep for mine because I did not want to accidentally ding it against something. From start to finish the whole project took about 30 minutes. I used Ipe for the handle. With 20,000 strikes, this should outlast me.

The quality of this kit is great. The one problem I had was that the Magnisium shaft is far less than 5/8 in diameter. I drilled the 5/8 hole, turned the handle and then realized that the hole was to big. Had to use expanding glue to make it all work, and be tight. Measure the shaft size before you drill!!! You may be able to avoid the same problem I had.
