Benjamin's Best High Speed Steel 2" Roughing Gouge, 19" long. The roughing gouge is primarily used for aggressively reducing square spindle blanks to round cylinders. The result is a rough cut blank ready for detailing with the spindle gouge a skew chisel. Don't try to use a roughing gouge for bowl turning.

I was looking for a large rougher & this one is it. Because of its size it dampens square stock chatter. Watch out using it on pen blanks. Its a bit too much.

Having paid much more for turning tools in the past, I didn't think this tool would measure up. I was wrong. Now I regret having paid so much in the past for tools that were not as good as Benjamin's Best. This gouge sharpens beautifully and holds it's edge under the roughest work. It is fast and easy to turn a log into a blank with this large tool.

I recently started turning green wood. This gouge worked great in rounding rough cut logs. I highly recommend this gouge. It has very good steel. Dave V

Large spindle roughing gouge

1) I'd like to see the rear corners (by the handle) relieved a bit; they dig into my left hand and 2) For its size, I'd really like a longer handle. Overall a great deal for the price.

Roughing Gouge

I am not an experienced wood turner, but this gouge seems to work very well for me. I have used in only on small stock i.e. 2-3" squares, and probably only need a 1" model, but I have no regrets. The tool is well made, I have not yet had to sharpen the gouge and it seems to quickly do the job as I work with my small lathe.
