5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Great Tool Not Just For Pens!

I often buy turning tools unhandled and in making my own handles, I want to make sure that I can maintain a positive grip on the base with my back hand. This tool does that perfectly. In face, any tool handle where grip is an issue can benefit from the enhancement that this tool provides. It can also be used to both decorate the rim of a bowl and provide a better grip for, say, soup or spaghetti bowls which are intended to hold hot food. The only issue I found was the complete lack of instructions. In fact, I had to find a comparable tool on another vendor's website to find a picture showing which way the tool should be held.

I could not wait to turn a couple of pens. They came out great. Don't know what I did without it.

The first time I used it, it cut too deep and ruined the pen.

The chisel is all right. It is nothing that you can't live without. I would recommended buying any other tool before this one.

The problem here is in order to get nice beads on the pen you have to cut into the wood so deep that you invaribly hit the brass tube. Making beads is not something you can expect to perform with this tool. Do not recommend it to anyone.

It takes the need for cutting out of the procedure and allows for a comfort grip

5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 HSS Notch Gauge
Reviewer: Hector Hernandez (Phoenix, AZ)

I like my grip/notch gauge from Penn State Industries. It adds nine lines or notches on a pen blank and makes the work piece look custom made. I used this tool on a Buffalo pencil holder and it came out nice. This beats using a wire to make each line, one at a time on the wood blank and saves time. The only problem I encountered by using this tool, was that I used it on a thin piece of wood blank, and one of the lines on the end or edge of the tool cut right through the blank to the tube, so care must be taken not to press too hard on one end of the work piece to avoid cutting through to the tube. I am very satisfied with this tool and would recommend it to other pen makers.
