Dyed Spalted Grey Hackberry 3/4in. x 3/4in. x 5in. Pen Blank from Barry Gross
Description
Hackberry is a tree in the Elm family not normally used for wood projects. However, once the spalted root system is cut and stabilized it presents a beautiful and unusual complex grain.Stabilized wood has been processed with a resin material. This process can be useful to strengthen punky areas, and it will limit expansion and shrinkage due to changes in humidity and help it resist rot. The stabilizing process does not fill voids.
Stabilized blanks can be worked on a lathe, using standard woodworking techniques and tooling with light touches.
