Who is Barry Gross?
Barry Gross is a highly respected pen maker. He’s published over 50 articles in several woodworking magazines, is an author of three books on turning and is frequently a guest speaker / presenter at many woodworking shows and turning clubs throughout the northeast. Barry was commissioned from the White House to make pens for former Vice President Cheney and his pens can be found in the pockets of Steven Spielberg, Greg Norman, and the former Speaker for The House of Representatives, Dennis Hastert.

not what i expected

the blank i received had an ok burl but was solid brown overall made an average looking pen that had none of the color variations shown in the picture

Buckeye Burl pen blank

The burl is top notch, the colors, figure and quality of the stabilizing process are all excellent. To be honest I did expect a full size blank for the price, but overall it was worth the cost.

Beautiful, but may be a little tricky to drill

I have now ordered 7 of these blanks. Three have provided for some creative (but possible) drilling situations due to inclusions or live edges inherent to burl material. I have been pleased with the end results, though. The colors do 'pop' with a glossy CA finish. I would recommend ordering an extra blank or two, especially if you're drilling for 8mm or larger tubes.
