Corn Cob Combo Pack - all 7 colors
7 Color Assortment of Corn Cob Pen blanks: Red, Blue, Orange Green, Gray, Purple & Clear
Give the gift of a truly unusual pen made from a corn cob pen blank. Turning a corn cob blank is a fun and unique experience. The blanks are made from cobs that are dyed, stabilized and hardened. Blanks are about 5" long and will make pens up to 5/8" diameter (varies). Turns and finishes similar to stabilized woods, requires a light touch and may require filling occasional voids with CA glue. (also item #PKWXCC099)Stabilizing is a process that impregnates the wood or burl with resins and renders it into an ideal / plastic like turning blank. The finished turned blanks has a vibrant grain and a surface with a brilliant and durable shine.

Last year (2006) I purchase some Corn Cob blanks off of eBay that were stabilized by the seller. While they turned ok, they tended to 'blow-out' quite a bit. They were only good for smaller pens, i.e. Comfort or Father Sing. Unlike the eBay blanks I bought, these Penn State Industries Corn Cob blanks are professionally stabilized. I use these for Cigar and Polaris pens. They give off chips and curls like plastic, but turn like wood. I usually only use my Skew to turn these, so I can start with 220 grit when sanding. I sand these to 400 grit and finish with Renaissance Wax and buff on a dedicated wheel. I don't fill any of the holes, they are natural formations that do not detract from the finished piece, they add character. When people see these, they find it hard to believe it's made from Corn Cobs. First impression is they are Snake (although, most farmers know what they are) or carved and colored or woodburned. I personally like the natural, red, and black, but try all the colors and see what you like.
