Star Spangled Majestic Jr. pen

This is one of the nicest pens I ever made. It is not that hard to make and turns down very easy.

The kit is truly majestic!

This was far and away the most difficult pen project I've done so far, but the end product was well worth the effort. The only caution I would add is to probably use epoxy rather than thick super glue to glue in the brass tubes--the positioning of the tubes is a bit finicky and the epoxy allows the extra time to get it right. Definitely go with the super glue acrylic finish and the "I can't believe this finish" polish. It's amazing and gets lots of "Wows!"

Fantastic Product

This makes an awesome pen. I was a little apprehensive about the complexity or difficulty but I followed the instructions, everything went together and turned as it was supposed to and the finished pen was just fantastic. So far I've made two and donated them to a local VFW. They're going to sell raffle tickets and see if they can't raise some money.

It is a great kit. Could not have asked for anything better. It went together easily. All the parts fit like they should. I used sand paper to turn. I was not comfortable to use tools on a project like that yet.

Kit is well packaged, instructions come with both the pen and the "Flag" inlay kits...but the online video is the most helpful. I followed the video exactly. There was a very slight reaction with the thin-set super-glue I used to set the inlays and fill any gaps. Just a little heat and fumes, not a concern in a large shop but might be if you work in the house. The red dye bled a little, but did not penetrate the white stripes. I went right to sandpaper for shaping, I did not want to chance a tool grabbing and splitting the expensive inlay kit (I don't trust my sharpening ability yet, lol). Even so, blank to finished pen was quick. Remember to get the proper bushings when you order, Penn State's minimum shipping will more than double their cost if you forget and have to order them seperately;( Finished pen looks and writes great.

Buyer Beware!

This kit looked like the perfect gift for a retired military friend of mine. Of course, it was backordered for several weeks. (After it was featured on the cover of the Penn State Catalog...who does that?) So it wasn't going to get there in time, anyway. But it finally came. This kit is not for the faint of heart or short of patience. It's certainly not "easy to assemble" as mentioned in the ad...while not overly difficult, there are some problems. The video is helpful, but you have to use some slow-setting CA to get the tubes situated correctly. I didn't have that; fortunately, the kit is a little forgiving, so if you're not too far off, you can cut around the errors. Once I got it put together, the turning went fine. A sharp skew was all I needed. While sanding, though, disaster struck. A star came loose. "No problem," I thought. There were, after all, several spare stars in the kit. I ended up using them all, as they either broke while trying to replace the missing one, or came loose again once re-cut and re-sanded. So now I have a 60-dollar waste of an afternoon. I guess I can order some more tubes and another kit, but of course I have to wait until Monday, because Penn State doesn't have customer service representatives on nights or weekends (when most of their customers are probably working on their projects and could use the help).
