Civil War Gun Metal Pen Kit

58 Caliber Minie’ Ball replica cap (actual size - used on pen cap)
This was the most widely used bullet in the civil war. Originally a French army bullet, it was officially adopted by the Americans in 1855. Rings were added to the original design to hold grease to help ease the bullet down the barrel as well as to collect powder residue when fired. Used in the Model 1861 Springfield Rifle Musket.

The Model 1861, commonly referred to as the “Springfield”, was a single-shot, muzzle-loading gun favored for its range, accuracy and reliability. It fired the 58-caliber Minie’ Ball and had a maximum effective range of 500 yards. It was the most common firearm in use by both Union and Confederate forces.

The 1860 Colt Army Revolver was the favorite side arm for cavalry, infantry, and artillery troops and was the most widely used handgun of the Civil War. This revolver was a six shot model allowing the user to fire six times before needing to stop and reload the weapon. The bullets were designed for the round rifle barrel, and the cartridge was paper and glued to the ball.

I made two of these pens to send to my brother for sending me the wood to turn them. When he received the pens he said "Do What" you really turned these! I made one with Black Walnut and the other with Catalpa...Very good design and quality.

These are very unusual and sell almost as soon as a customer sees them. Fit and finish are good, not too difficult to make and assembly is easy. The refill may protrude in the "closed" position but a little sanding on the plastic base fixes that and does not effect operation.

It is am impressive pen kit. Parts are good, easy to turn and assemble. Not the best feeling pen in your hands, but people want it after seeing it. Would have liked to see the top bullet fastened better to the pen, a little wobbly, but overall a good pen, just put my second order in for more.

I used the Amboyna Burl wood with this kit and it is fantastic. Looks like what someone would have written with in 1862. It is a great attention getter with any hunter, ER doctor or Civil War historian. The satin kit looks more like the actual miniball. I used a Steel-like acrylic for a gun metal kit and it also looks great. Only drawback to kit is the pen's weight will pull down your shirt pocket and the rifle clip is hard to fit on a shirt, compared to other PSI pens. Otherwise well worth the $. Chet
