This was my second peppermill project. I used the blank kit sold here as well, although i wish the cap blank was a little bigger. The turning was easy, and you get to learn how to make jam chucks as an added bonus!
I just finished my first pepper mill. It came out real nice. Not much to the kit, but it's the best and smoothest grinder mechanism I have ever used. A little pricey, but for a ceramic grinder the price is reasonable. I did not have to glue anything. On the cap I used a 7/8" Forstener bit and took a fine cut with a small scraper and sanded until the top ribs press fit. I did remove the two lock tab points though. I used a 1" diameter bit on the through hole in the base instead of the 1 1/16" bit called for in the instructions. I sanded to get a nice fit on the part of the cap that enters the top of the base. The measurement of that lower boss is only 1.02" so it doesn't take much to get slip fit that's not sloppy which it would be with 1 1/16". I used a 1 5/8" bit instead of the 1 3/4" bit called for for the mechanism body and took off the catch points and snaded very little off the 6 ribs to achieve a solid press fit. Could have probably scraped and sanded the 1 1/2" hole instead, but this way was easier. A bit extension is a must. A nice set of 1/2" to 2 1/2" Forstener bits is real handy, but you can get just the ones you need. The set is a better deal.
