4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Good Chuck Threads a Little Short
Reviewer: Raymond Ruthen (Glastonbury, CT)

The chuck works nice and it makes it easy to take the stopper on and off the lathe and stay centered. The threaded stud could be a little longer to take the abuse turning causes. I frequently have to add a little glue to restore the threads after a catch because the threads pull out.

5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Stopper mandrel is great design
Reviewer: Louie Powell (Saratoga Springs, NY)

The PSI stopper mandrel is simple and elegant - a hunk of steel that threads onto the spindle and that includes a 3/8" stud onto which the blank can be threaded. It's very easy to use. The only challenge is in threading the blank. PSI provides a bit with the mandrel that is properly sized for the stud. It's possible to use a tap to cut threads in the blank after drilling, but tapping a blank axially doesn't always work. There are two approaches that seem to be better for me: 1. for softer woods, first use a tapered tap, followed by a 'bottoming' tap (in which the thread extends almost all the way to the end of the tap). 2. for harder woods, instead of trying to cut threads, creating threads by deforming the side of the hole in the blank works best. Use either a 3/8" bolt, or the threaded stud on the mandrel.

I am fairly new to turnig, but with the use of the bottle stopper chuck I was able to make fridge magnets and a few other items immediately. Thanks PSI for making this available for those of us who are in need of assistance..

The provided drill is too large which prevents the chuck's threads from grabbing. Drilling a 1/64" smaller hole works well but you need to cut the threads with a tap especially in hardwoods. Turning your piece is easy.

Dead-on center, more than adequately made, does exactly what it's supposed to do. I have NO complaints, makes turning a stopper a snap, even for a novice.

Reviewer: Scott Marshall (Murfreesboro, TN)

This is a nice mandrel and a good value. It is very handy for turning stoppers without needing a tailstock. I have also used it to turn screwdriver handles (with a tailstock) instead of using a 4-prong drive.

The mandrel worked well enough however the threads don't cut cleanly and actually putting together the wine stopper was difficult. This was corrected by oiling the threads on the stopper but I do not think one should have to resort to that. It is quite difficult to hold the tapered stopper when the wood binds.

The Stopper Mandrel works great. It makes it much easier for me to quickly turn the bottle stoppers.

Used the Mandrel/Chuck and it does what it needs to, especially for hardwoods. Things get a little loose with softer wood (cedar) but that is probably as would be expected.
