Does the job you expect it to do. No problem holding a sharp edge. In my hands it feels well balanced and I enjoy using the tool.

Not all spindles are for pens. Some are so much larger that even the normally largest 1/2" gouges are insufficient and I kept reaching for my roughing gouge. But it's the wrong shape for beads and coves and this new tool absolutely fills that need, as well as for smoothly shaping long, shallow curves. But something that is intended to take off that much wood in one pass should have a more robust handle. It needs to be thicker and even two or so inches longer for it to feel perfect.

the 1" spindle gouge made my pen turning a lot faster. i can now take square stock and turn it to a round faster and easier than the 3/8 that came with my lathe. I do most of my work with the 1" gouge and only use the 3/8 for small fine work, wood or acrylic the 1" gouge works great
