While the 3/8" might be alright for hardwood, my intended use was in the classroom while turning pine to make candle sticks. Found that it spun much too easily and a 1/2" drive center is far superior for soft woods and the 1/2" size is still small enough to fit into the 3/4" hole drilled for the candle.

I have found that Penn State has a lot of interesting tools and accessories that can't be found anywhere else, at any price. This "mini driver" (pun intended) is just such an example. It works great for those tiny spindle projects and lets you get a closer cut at the end. Well worth the small investment.
