For most bowls, there's little to say against leaving an exposed foot which is clamped in #2 or#3 step jaws, but for shallow bowls and platters, even a 1/4" exposed foot can spoil the appearance of something smooth and clean. Being able to create a hidden dovetail groove in the bottom against which to clamp with these jaws is a perfect solution!

Nice addition to my barracuda chuck jaw collection. Works great on most all of my bowl and vessel turnings.
