There are about 60 species of Banksia and all are found in Australia. These are seed pods, the holes being where the seeds were. I have used these to make Twig Pots or Bud Vases. Under the hard outside layer is a layer of velvet like material - very interesting. There are instructions on the web to make a bowl with one of the larger ones. A friend of mine has quartered a pod, filled the holes with inlay material and turned pens. One word of caution when turning these: Wear a face shield.
