Great penpress. It sure beats using the drill press. I have it bolted to one end of my bench and I just move from one process to another.

Reviewer: jerry sodan (Graham, NC)

The pen press is extremely useful when putting the pens together. The only thing I would add is one more spacer approximately 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. This would greatly assist when assembling slimline twist 7mm pens. It is needed when assembling the top of the pen with the pocket clip and end cap. The press will not fully seat the end cap unless I place 2 popsicle sticks behind one of the spacers when I use all 3.

I had to make 200 pens and letter openers for an order, this press really saved me time. Heavy enough, no mounting is necessary. I took the spring off, it worked better for me. Only complaint is the plastic knob you press against is too soft, after 50 pens it had a hole almost 3/8" deep (and I wasn't over pressing them).

I'm just getting a hand at using the pen press. It sure is beter then fighting my vice or cranking my lathe. I'm inpressed at how well made this PenPress is, so I made a couple of changes to help with my RA stiffness in my hands. I removed the Plastic and alumninum ram faces and fit the plastic ones that were on my lathe press ,they work better as one end is cupped to hold the pen steady and the other end has a small removable rod on one end this makes the press able to assemble and disaemble pens. With the 10 dollars off and 15 % discount I got it to my home for less then the suggested price. Wow! great buy and great penpress. Roger

Reviewer: Thomas Hamilton (Madison, WI)

- I'd been using my vise, clamps, whatever, then I got a $10 coupon and thought I'd try this pen press, it was money well spent. - One of two improvements I had to make was to cover the metal piston. Instead of using a chunk of cardboard as suggested I used a small hole saw and cut out a circle of lexan and hot glued that over the end. - Another addition I made was to add a piece of 1/2" x 1/2" aluminum angle to the long side so all I have to do is clamp that in my vise and I'm ready to go. - It's a nice tool, easy to use and speeds up pen assembly, and with the holiday's around the corner that's a good thing.

I have been turning pens since Feb. I have tied making my own assembly press- didn't work! I tried (with limited success!) to assemble pens with a bench vise and I have tried using a squeeze clamp. The spring-loaded heavy-duty assembly press works great! It is extremely easy to use and doesn't take up much workbench space.

Reviewer: Bruce Woody (Brandon, FL)

This pen assembly press is the easiest one to use of the three I have had the opportunity to use. The cast iron base provides the weight necessary to keep the press stationary without the need for clamps. The mechanism works flawlessly with practically no effort. A grest addition to any pen makers tools, and less expensive than other models.

1 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 5 Poor Design for some pens assembly, 9.21.2009
Reviewer: leon tempalski (pittsburgh, PA)

The first problem to the press is that it does have enough flexibility to fit short pieces as well as multiple lengths. If the spacer blocks were of significant material pressing a pen would not crack one of the spacers when attempting to assemble a sculptured pen. During assembly the clip going into the cap needs to be pressed into a brass bushing and the adjustment is nearly 2 1/2" short from achieving this. If i try it another way such as at the final assembly the press pushes the bushing into the pen while the end piece remains loose on the clip. advise or can we talk about a refund?

This is the best pen press that I have used and seems to be the best on the market. It would be perfect if the adjustment bar could be set with stops; The set screw doesn't hold very well and often slips.

Works so well it's scary. Simple and goof proof. Spring load helps hold pen to make assembly easier (like a third hand). Clamps in my bench vise for quick installation and removal. Screw holes for mounting are also perfect size for removing transmission from 7mm pens. Thanks for a very useful accessory.

This is the best ever pen press. I have tried a couple others and this is the best, and smoothest. The parts press together so easily that you could press parts together with just your pinky. This is really a great product, and if you have tried others, you have to try this one, because it is truly the best one out there.

4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Good Press, 8.15.2009
Reviewer: Scott (North Kingstown, RI)

Very Good penpress and better value. This press has a cast iron base making it heavy which is a good thing. It is simple to use. The spring works well holding parts in place before pressing together. The handle is long enough to ease pressing and give good control. There are some improvements which could be made. More spacers would help. I replaced the plastic mandrel with a stronger UHMW-PE version with a centering indentation. And a plastic or other protective face on the aluminum ram protects the pen parts.

This press is very simple and smooth to use. I was very surprised at the weight of the press. It has a very heavy sturdy base. The spring keeps the pen parts in place as you line them up to press, and the adjustment blocks make it quick to press different lengths easily. I waited to long to purchase this .... don't make that mistake!

Reviewer: Randall Bates (Athens, TN)

This is an excellent tool to use to assemble pens. The only drawback is that there are not enough spacer blocks to assemble each end of the pen, so a spacer block must be made or some other fabrication of a spacer to make up the space. Other than that, it is a great tool, and I would recommend it to anyone. If there were more spacers, it would be five stars.

I had been using your first issue of pen press for many years, and the pressed metal bracket was beginning to be "bent out of shape". After making a purchase of the new cast iron press, and using it for pressing many pens together,I can say this revised press is 100 % better that the old one. It is so precise, and does not "flex" like the previous one. Thanks for making this new design available. Every one that makes pens, should invest in one of these.

My Dad bought me a lathe and pen tuning kit for my 12th birthday. The Pen assembly press was delivered at a later date on backorder. I put together 4 pens on a vise. This took way too long and was not real efficient. Once I got the pen assembly press, I was able to put together 5 pens within 10 minutes. The pen press is easy to use and well worth the price. Reviewer: Blair Smith (Liberty Lake, WA)

it broke the second pen we used it on. the pivot houseing for the mechanical arm is made of cheap pot metal and when we applied a little pressure to squeeze a pen together, it broke. Apparently we needed more spacers behind the spring loaded stop to put the clip on the top part of the slim line pen. We are going to order a replacement part, we'll see how that goes.

The press can be adjusted to any size, and puts even pressure from start to finish. The press is just great, and is made to last a lifetime. I recommend this to anyone that is using another method besides a press. I use to figure for the price I could get by with a clamp, and now I for the price I just can't live without it.

Reviewer: John Stewart (Taylor, TX)

I am delighted at the way it works so easily. It is heavey duty and gives you confidence that you can control the end result...a complete pen. I had been using a small hammer while waiting for the pen press and screwed up 4 twist mechanizes and two couplings. I just hit it to hard and didn't have any real control over the process. I would tell anyone building pens this is the second thing that is required after the lathe.

I finally purchased the assembly press. I've been hammering parts together with some success. The press makes assembly significantly easier. The only problem I have encountered is when I press the pointed end of the slimline pen on. One needs to make sure it stays square, it will tend to go in crooked and bend the insert or break the wood.

5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Very useful and worthwhile tool, 1.14.2009
Reviewer: Brenda Hardman (Charlottesville, VA)

Overall, I find the V4 pen assembly press to be an improvement over the previous model. The heavier base, the heavy duty design of the handle/press assembly and the spring loading feature are marked improvements. The one disadvantage that I have encountered is the adjustability in the maximum and minimum length. Long pens, such as the bullet cartridge, are too long to fit in the press for the final assembly step. Pressing small parts together is also problematic unless you put a block of wood between the stop and the press head to shorten the distance between them. However, the pluses outweigh the minuses to make this a very useful and worthwhile tool for any penmaker. Thank you PSI for your continuing innovativeness!

When I ordered my press PSI accidently sent me the V3 Press, I used the V3 for a week till the V4 arrived and got to see the differances right away, the V3 has a hole for 2 dowel rods to help center the pen/pencil for a good centered pressing, the V4 does not have this option, so I had to do it myself, the springs that help with holding the pen/pencil halfs in place really help, to the designer "KUDOS" the heavy duty base is good as well, the set screw that holds the handle helps keep the handle from falling off. The new V4 design is a good design and the purchase was a great experiance. They really helped me out when I was sent the wrong press, they told me to keep and use the V3 press till my V4 arrived, no other company that I know would ever do that, Thanks PSI. I'll be a trusted customer for now on...
