I am embarrassed to admit this is the second time I have received this DVD. I thought this one might be different, but it was the same. From the first one I received I taught myself to make pens. I had never turned anything on a wood lathe in my life, but with this DVD I taught myself. I must have watched that thing a hundred times.
Very good introduction for those new to pen turning. Thanks for making this available.

I think this free dvd is helpful for someone just wanting to get into pen making. It would be nice to show letter openers also, but it is informative , and you cant beat the "free" price.
Reviewer: Walt Shipley (Yerington, NV)
It is good. I have watched it several times. I would like to see more detail on the how to. A little more on accessories for pen making would be good. It was good enough to get me interested in making pens.
Reviewer: Marc Dunkelberg (Dallas, TX)
Very helpful. I've watched 3 times.
I thought the DVD was great, wished there were other options on it, for instance basics of bowel turning. I also think a little more information on which lathe would fit the needs, and what type equipment, and tools are needed to perform these functions should of been mentioned, this would benefit both Penn, and the person learning the skill.
When I ordered this dvd I thought that it was going to be just another quick step through video. I was very surprised and grateful that it is in fact a very helpful and informative dvd. The instructor not only goes through every step thoroughly he also explains why you should or should not approach or implement cetain methods during the process.
Had I not watched this dvd and just gone with the few downloaded video's that are available on the web I would have definitely messed up somewhere along the way.
Overall this dvd is an extremely informative and helpful in depth aid to anyone considering taking up this aspect of turning.
Great job Penn State for this excellent "FREE" dvd.

A very informative approach to the art of turning pens. All steps well presented and photographed; instructions well presented for use of all items needed for turning pens. I just want to know how the person presenting the work is able to keep his workshop in pristine condition, there was no sawdust anywhere. Just kidding. Thank you.

Reviewer: Charles Fowler (King George, VA)
Did not think I would like making pens, but the video was free, so what the heck. They have almost become an obsession. Every scrap of interesting wood from my shop as well as my firewood stack has found its way into the making of a pen barrel. The video is well done, concise, and informative. It makes it look easy, which it actually is. Ten minutes to make a pen is the norm after only a few pens. Another five minutes (spread over a day) to apply four coats of rub on poly, and about a minute to assemble. Hope my friends like pens and pencil sets!

Also the part to sharpen the tools to the right angles for the best performance of the tools.

First of all, I would like to thank you for sending me the free DVD. It's hard to beat that price. The instruction was excellent. Gary obviously has done this before, and was not just reading it off a script. All of the steps were covered in detail with explanations of why he was doing what he was doing. I have taken a pen turning class some time ago, but the live classroom instruction was not as good as Gary's. My compliments!

Great video and much appreciated. Sound was a little low, which was the only reason I gave it a score less than 5.
I liked the casual atmosphere and the demonstration from start to finish on how to turn a pen. Very useful and inspiring to think one can make a pen so beautiful.
Also liked how the product names were mentioned and where they can be purchased.

I liked the way the DVD broke down the different stages of creating a pen. It showed close-ups when necessary and they helped to reinforce what the demonstrator was talking about. The demonstrator kept to the point, dialogue was well written, didn't get too wordy. Understandable, to the point, interesting. Thanks for a great DVD and I loved the price ;-). Ken

A wonderful, informative way to learn basic pen-making. The video is well planned and clearly shows the step-by-step process completely and accurately. All the tools and materials required are demonstrated. There are no "magic moments" that jump to a completed step, leaving the viewer with questions. From the video, I was able to identify all the necessary materials to order and, once receieved, turned my first simple slimline pen from start to finish within an hour.

I am new to pen making. When I received this Pen Making DVD I thought it would be just another hokie video put together just to increase sales. Boy was I wrong, this DVD help me through so many questions I had and explained everything very thoroughly.
I am a wood crafts person who has a fairly complete shop and even a large (40”) lathe and have been interested in the Penn State Ind., products for over two years with a few false starts (wrong mandrel). The DVD is what convinced me I could do it - and I purchased the variable speed midi-lathe kit based on the video. The video DVD although not perfect – does do what the catalog cannot – show the practical side of creating a beautiful item from the shop in a short amount of time with some basic tools (but the correct tools!) . There is a bit of confusion when ordering – as the form specifies shipping cost is required, and it turns out it is not. I have made 5 pens/pencils now and look forward to making many more. The DVD is the best sales / marketing / illustrative resource you have!
Reviewer: Robert Smith (Garland, TX)
But then again, basic is just what you need when you are a beginner. The closeups are clear and the process is easy to follow. It's nice to see that process in full video instead of static pictures.

I have turned 4 pen and pencil sets since receiving my orders and am looking forward to expanding my adventure into challenges exceeding the ones presented by the slimline styles provided with the starter package. I am very satisfied with my introduction to pen and pencil making. Better information regarding dimensions of the different turning profiles is something I will be looking for in the near future.

I was able to know what to order so that I could get started. I have turned five "slim line" pen and pencils since watching the video. It was nice that it did not spend alot of time on advertising all of the various products. It was focused on how to turn pens. It was great. Thanks
Reviewer: Michael Whalen (Conklin, NY)
Excellent. Easy to watch, simple instructions and very interesting. Currently building my shop and I intend to order as soon as it is complete.
The main reason I wanted the DVD was to see the pen making process on the lathe from start to finish. The most complicated part to me that was omitted was that the demonstrator started turning the pen and did not show how to insert the mandrel into the chuck of the lathe and how to tighten it up. Also what tools are needed to do this and is it included in the kit. I would have liked to see this technical aspect before seeing the pen turning process. I would re-do the video and add this into the beginning and mention if instructions are included with the purchase of the lathe, since the video does not show this.

I actually requested this DVD for my husband who loves making pens. He has watched this DVD several times and says he has seen something new each time he watches it. Thanks for making this type of information so easy to get.

I needed to learn the process for making a pen on the lathe. Your dvd provided the information that I needed. I will continue to use the DVD as a reference and I will loan it to anyone who wants to learn the process. Thank you for the DVD. It came at the perfect time.

Helped to avoid some potentially disasterous results on my first turnings.

I just finished watching the pen making DVD and found it to be full of great information. I recently aquired a mini lathe and I am just getting started in the woodturning hobby. Being a novice at this type of woodworking the DVD provided great information on not only how to make pens but also the necessary equipment and supplies needed to do the job. I hope to start ordering the needed items to start my woodturning adventure in the very near future. After watching the DVD I have a real good idea on what I need.

I liked the DVD on pen making. It was a great introduction dvd into pen making as well as being instructional. Really made it look like just about anyone could make a pen with the right equipment.

This is a great instructional dvd about pen turning for anyone, especially beginners as myself, to watch. It really helped me decide what I needed to get started without confusing me. Plus, the fact that it is free doesn't hurt anything either. Thanks PSI.
The way the guy in the video shows how to make a pen is ok, for the bare basics, but I wouldn't do it that way. To start with He gets VERY heavy handed with his cuts. The way that he shows how to turn a piece down could be very dangerous! Most woods if you tried doing it that way, it would explode in your face.
It's better to take your time and take several small cuts then to try to take a couple of heavy cuts.
But, he does give you the basics on it. The pen that he ends up with I would be ashamed of if mine turned out like that. For some good videos on improving your turning techniques check out the ones on You Tube. Just do a search for videos on Pen Turning. There is a good set of 8 or 9 videos on Turning the Slim Line Pen. I would suggest these video's to anyone that is interested in turning pens.
If you are new to turning wood &/or new to using a wood lathe PLEASE look into those other video's before doing it the way its shown on this video.

I recently received the "FREE" DVD on how to make a pen using your products. This is one of the best tools you have. It gave me all the information I needed to place an intelligent order. For me, as a suggestion, the next DVD you make to include a "Closed Caption" feature would be helpful! However, if you watch it three or four times it is so well done it isn't hard to figure out. Thanks for all the information.

My sons and I learned alot from this very informative DVD
This is just a thank you. Thank you for your free DVD on pen turning. This helped me to get started and I have really enjoyed making pens. Your company not only has great advice, and instructions. You have great products and prices. I am totally disabled and my disability has taken away a lot of things I use to enjoy. Now I have found a new hobby that is giving me back some pride and abilities that I thought were gone. Once again, thanks for showing me new way of feeling good again.

This is pretty cool and I learned some stuff off of here. I recommed it. I got the Turncrafter Pro Variable Speed mini lathe (TCLPROVS) and that is a nice lathe. My dad has a cabinet shop so i got lots of wood to make pens and other stuff. Thank you PSI.

I just wanted to let you know how pleased I am with my order. I recently ordered some pen crafting tools and slim-line pen kits. I was very impressed with the speed at which the order was processed and the overall quality of the merchandise. I had never turned anything on a lathe before, but the first night I got my tools set up and completed two kits. My wife took the first pen I completed and she loves it. I really enjoyed making these kits! I have plans to make several more of your kits. The only real problem is deciding what to choose from the many choices you provide. Thanks again, you not only have you created another wood turner, but also a dedicated customer.
