4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Description misleading, 7.21.2009
Reviewer: Jim Fox (Placerville, CA)

I have no problem with the product I received, but from the description and picture, I thought I was getting American Bison (buffalo) horn, instead of Asian water buffalo horn. The price is still good, and the product "worked" fine, it is just not clear from you Internet description. "Indian River Buffalo" can mislead a lot of people. Water Buffalo, Asian or Indian, or Asian water buffalo, or carabao, as they are known in the Philippines, would be much better terminology.

Great product. Mine had crack in both pieces but using CA glue was able to use it anyway Turned out quite well.

Great looking/feeling natural material. It turns well and polishes to a warm gloss. Great for the entire pen body or use thin slices sandwiched between contrasting wood sections for a very elegant effect. I use it to dress up some of the basic slimline, comfort and designer kits. Makes an inexpensive kit look much more impressive.

This comes with a paper that tells you how to drill and turn the horn. I just did as it said and it came out great.

Soak the horn first, before drilling or turning. Make certain your tools are sharp, your cuts are light and the speed is low. Wet sand only, unless you like the smell of roasting keratin (horn). Great results with a micromesh kit, finished off with a couple passes with polishing compound. A final coat of wax and I was very pleased.

If your used to turning wood only be ready to purchase a different polish as you don't use sandpaper. I will suggest you soak in water for 12 hours or more and that is excellent tip. Makes absolutly beautiful pens and yep it stinks while being turned and drilled.

This material was easy to work and polishes up like plastic. It makes beautiful pens. Be prepared if you've never worked horn. It has a strong odor
